Shahrzad starded her dance training at the age of 11. She quickly discovered her natural talent for movement and it has been her passion in life ever since. She has trained in many styles of dance including ballet, Indian folk and classical, Samba, Salsa, and, of course, belly dance. Her training started in the Philadelphia with local star teachers Habiba and Najia. As her level and learning progressed she reached out for more and was led to belly dance star Faten Salama who would become her main teacher and inspiration. Since then she has never stopped studying and searching for knowledge, she regularly travels to train with world renowned teachers from Egypt and abroad.
Although she trained in many different styles, the first moment Shahrzad was exposed to Egyptian music and dance she was in love. She has made it her mission to learn everything there is to know about the traditions of Egyptian dance and music and how they relate to the culture. Her passion for the regional dances of Egypt have inspired her to not only train extensively in Egyptian folkloric dance but in many of the traditional dances of North Africa and the Middle East including Tunisian, Moroccan, Khaleegy, and Dabke.
Shahrzad is an award winning performer who currently travels to do shows up and down the east coast. She has performed for many celebrities and government officials including several Middle Eastern ambassadors and members of Morocco's royal family. She has also been featured in concerts with famous Arabic singers from Tunisia, Morocco, Lebanon, and Iraq including Hatem Idar and Saad. She has worked extensively at night clubs and large private events in NYC, Philadelphia, and Washington DC.
Over her many years of dance Shahrzad has developed a unique teaching style. Her deep and ever evolving understanding of movement, music, and performance enables her to effectively train beginner to professional level dancers. She enjoys sharing her passion and knowledge so that others can experience the joy of dance. She is currently one of the main teachers and choreographers at Saffron Dance in Arlington VA and frequently travels to teach workshops. She also trains several professional dancers for performance and competition.
